Even Hollywood entertainment bible Variety has taken note, and has reported that Shinji, Asuka, Rei and co. have just sold US$13.9 million, making this the biggest opening weekend of any movie this year in Japan. Part of that success is that the film was playing everywhere (224 screens in all) and even took over all nine screens at the Shinjuku Wald 9 theater with shows starting at 6am on opening day. Unreported in the Variety article is the “repeat viewing” effect, where wild Eva fans would exit the theater only to turn around and march right back in to watch it over again to try and figure out what the heck they had just seen. Other fan reactions are ranging from “WTF” to “Nani kore?” (“What is this?”). While it’s not a bad movie, it’s certainly not a conventional one either. The fact that it is likely to out-perform the previous two Rebuild of Evangelion films is kind of remarkable in that respect. Are you surprised by this or is it to be expected from Eva?
Lets face it, the image caught my attention just like it did yours.
Believe it of not Eva fans coan now decorate their decorate the home button of their iPhone with something a bit gaudy, Strapya has begun offering Eva 3.0 cubic zirconia gems and gold color finish coins in the motifs of NERV, Seele, Ayanami Rei, Ikari Shinji, Asuka Langley, and Makinami Mari Illustrious. Both varieties are selling for 945 yen (US $11.61) each. To me this just sounds like a waste of money, but what do you think?
“God of Manga” Osamu Tezuka became associated with his adaptation of classic spiritual epic Journey to the West such as the biographical anime about him, I Am Son Goku, referred to it. Akira Toriyama gained international fame with a little spoof called Dragon Ball. Now Kung Fu Hustle’s martial arts comedy master Stephen Chow is ready to put his mark on the oft adapted legend. Chow is on board to direct, write and produce the film. Current plans don’t have him starring in the picture. The Chinese production is offering something on-par with Hollywood blockbuster standards. Do you trust Stephen Chow to do a good job, or is this just another flop waiting to happen?
While Dark Horse’s release of The Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Historia, came out back in August hitting #1 status on Amazon’s best seller list. The hardcover tome version is due out on January 29, 2013. But is this really worth shelling out shelling those hard earned rupies? Hyrule Historia packs nearly 300 pages of Zelda history, from the much-debated timeline to creator interviews, concept art, an exclusive Akira Himekawa comic, and more. But the question of whether or not it’s truly worth it is up for you to decide. So use your Triforce of Wisdom well and let us know what you decide.
Gamer Okan Kaya of Australia (28) went for a wolrd gaming record on CoD Black Ops 2 recently. The good news is he was not sent to the hospital and is just fine. The bad news? He was playing CoD and not Halo 4. (Looking forward to your hateraid in the comments below.) Following new Guinness regulations that allowed him a ten-minute break every hour (which could also be taken consecutively). So he operated with a bit of a safety net on this one. There was plenty of attention given to Kaya’s marathon multiplayer session, like bringing in new witnesses every four hours, with video footage of the marathon being sent to Guinness for verification. While it hasn’t been confirmed as the world record yet, the previous longest time was held by two Canadian gamers playing the Resistance games for 120 hours and 7 minutes. Gotta love those Canadian gamers.
“It was a lot of fun, but I’m glad it’s over,” Kaya said after the event was over.
It seems FPS’s are all the rage when it comes to marathoning right now, but if you were going to marathon a game what would it be and why? And how long do you think you would last?
Hot on the heels of the first reports of the specifications for the next Xbox console last weekend, tech site The Verge is reporting on multiple confirmations received from sources whithin Microsoft that are acknowledging the existence of an Xbox-branded set-top box for televisions in the same vein as a Roku or OnLive box, which in theory would allow for casual gaming instead of the more complete gaming experience found on current consoles and is being slated for next year’s holiday season alongside the next Xbox console.
The box itself would be running select parts of the recently released Windows 8 operating system, inline with Microsoft’s internal “One Windows, Many Devices” strategy currently employed with the Microsoft Surface tablet and Windows Phone 8 mobile operating system. The company is also said to be heavily considering the addition of a cellular telephony component for porting to its latest mobile operating system and future devices for a complete Xbox Live experience as well as licensing the software to television manufacturers as an integrated “smart TV” platform with gaming capabilities. While Microsoft has yet to even acknowledge the specifications of its next console, the idea that it would be adopting a simpler set-top box and possible smart TV platform as a secondary alternative for those that aren’t dedicated gamers isn’t all that surprising, considering its current direction with Xbox Live being more focused on general entertainment options for streaming content (including an app for Crunchyroll) than straightforward gaming, especially with today’s earlier domain transfer leak adding credence to the rumor, which includes a domain for “Xbox Live TV”. For its part, Microsoft has released a statement neither confirming nor explicitly denying the plans:
“Xbox 360 has found new ways to extend the console lifecycle by introducing controller-free experiences with Kinect and re-inventing the console with a new dashboard and new entertainment content partnerships. We are always thinking about what is next for our platform and how to continue to defy the lifecycle convention.”
With Microsoft’s plans for next year coming into focus, what does everyone think about this?
